Future of Elkhart’s Hawthorne Elementary School still unclear

The Elkhart Community School Board is still weighing the future of its oldest Elementary School.

Hawthorne Elementary School, built in 1929, is in need of roughly 5 million dollars in repairs and renovations.

WNDU reports that many are wondering if instead, it will close for good and convert into a Pre-K Center. A number of teachers and parents say they want the school to remain open in order to keep students from switching schools, many of them who come to Hawthorne by choice from other districts.

The school board will vote on the fate of the school and its nearly 500 students at the end of March.

Read between the lines – they’ve made their decision. The March 8 Board Minutes propose a change to the school boundaries that completely removes Hawthorne Elementary.

The school is done.
