12 dozen passengers were safely evacuated from a famous Mackinac Island ferry this week after it lost its steering.

It happened in the Straits of Mackinac Tuesday evening around 6 pm when The Huron, one of the Star Line ferries that carries passengers to the popular vacation destination, lost its steering and was unable to deploy its anchor.

A Coast Guard ship breaking ice in the area assisted the drifting vessel and helped transfer the passengers to another ship. The Huron was towed to St. Ignace.
