Elkhart man, 23, on motorcycle killed after colliding with pick-up truck

A 23-year-old Elkhart man was killed when the motorcycle he was operating struck a pick-up truck.

The collision happened around 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, in area of County Road 27 and County Road 20.

An 80-year-old man behind the wheel of the truck began pulling out of a driveway into the road when Jacob Smith, who was on the motorcycle, struck the front driver’s side of the truck.

Police and medics arrived and Smith was given life-saving measures, but he died at the scene.

A 37-year-old Elkhart woman who was a passenger on the motorcycle suffered serious injuries, but was conscious and breathing. She was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

No citations have been issued yet pending an investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office crash investigation team.
