Goshen man arrested after deadly shooting at Elkhart apartment complex

A Goshen man was arrested after a police standoff that happened following a deadly shooting.

It was around 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, when police received a call about gunshots coming from the North River Landing Apartments in the 2300 block of W. Lexington Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers located a male victim lying on the floor suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim, Thomas Ray Johnson, 37, of Elkhart, died at the hospital several hours later.

Through the investigation, investigators tracked down the suspect, Ja Liahs Michael Curry, 23, of Goshen, to an apartment in the 600 block of N. 2nd Street in Goshen.

Goshen police arrived at complex and tried to call Curry out of the apartment, but they say he refused to exit.

The Elkhart County SWAT Team was activated to serve a search warrant.

Curry then came out of the apartment and was taken into custody shortly before 12 p.m.

Curry was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary suspicion of murder.
