A 16-year-old boy charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun will be arraigned in court  on Thursday, April 13.

Investigators say the firearm was located in Kewuan Johnson’s backpack at Riley High School on Tuesday morning.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office says because the firearm was on school property, it’s a felony. They also say while acts by a person under the age of 18-years-old are generally filed in juvenile court, an individual who has been charged with certain crimes and was at least 16 years of age at the time that the alleged act was committed must be charged as an adult and, in this instance, the charge involving Johnson fits that category. Therefore, he’s been charged in Superior Court and is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.

The St. Joseph County parents of the year award should given to the boy’s parents. What a terrific job they are doing raising their child to adulthood.
