One man killed, another arrested after alcohol-involved crash in South Bend

One man was killed and another man was arrested after an apparent alcohol-involved crash in South Bend.

The collision happened around 10:20 p.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Lincolnway and  Sherman.

Walter Elkins Allen, 49, of South Bend, was driving eastbound on Lincolnway and tried to pass another eastbound vehicle but then struck a westbound vehicle driven by an 18-year-old woman.

Allen’s passenger, Donnivan Allen, 53, of South Bend, was rushed to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.

Walter Allen was arrested and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.

He has been formally charged with the following:

Count I: Operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a level 4 felony.

Count II: Operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, a level 5 felony.

The sentencing range for a level 4 felony is 2 to 12 years. The sentencing range for a level 5 felony is 1 to 6 years.

Allen will be arraigned at 1p.m. on Monday, June 12.
