Michigan will soon require most prison staff to wear body cameras.

The state will be joining others, such as Ohio, California and Florida, in requiring the cameras to be worn in some or all state prisons.

Bridge Michigan explains that state lawmakers approved $7.1 million in the state budget to fund the effort last month.

It comes after years of criminal justice advocates pushing for broader prison reform.

It is not clear how many allegations of abuse or neglect there are against Michigan prison staff or how many inmates have allegedly died due to neglect or abuse, but at least five inmates have died since 2002 due to starvation or dehydration.
