Elkhart PD looking to add five new squad cars

The Elkhart Police Department says they are still dealing with a vehicle shortage, but also say public safety isn’t being impacted by it.

The department tells WSBT that they are short 30 cars right now, and over the last two years they have cancelled orders, in some circumstances due to supply chain issues. They still have about 200 vehicles in their fleet, and police cars have more wear and tear than you might think.

At Monday’s Common Council meeting the police chief requested more funding for five new squad cars, and the council approved the purchase.
