A suspect has been arrested and charged for his role in the shooting death of his brother in South Bend.

On Saturday, July 15, around 12:30 a.m., South Bend Police were called to the 1700 block of E. Bowman Street on the report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located a male victim, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been identified as Michael Kotowski, 46.

Through an investigation and the processing of evidence by the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, the victim’s brother, 48-year-old Steven Kotowski, was taken into custody and has been charged with Reckless Homicide.

According to court documents, Steven Kotowski shot and killed his brother, Michael, after the two got into a squabble. A man who was at the scene earlier in the night says Steven brought beer and had a gun with him. He also said Steven would take things too far, and become aggressive after drinking too much, but the brothers’ relationship was good.

Kotowski is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
