Elkhart woman faces charges in death of her daughter

Elkhart Police // Alyssa Foster

An Elkhart woman is facing felony charges in connection with the death of her own infant daughter in early July. 24-year-old Alauraeve Allen was in court, this (last) week for an initial hearing on charges of murder and neglect of a dependent.

It was the evening of July 7 when Elkhart police and fire crews were called to an apartment in the 300 block of Middlebury Street and found a 6-month-old baby unconscious and not breathing.

The baby died at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Investigators with the Elkhart County Homicide Unit saw numerous visible injuries on the baby’s body. The girl’s death was ruled a homicide.

During an interview with police, Allen admitted she became angry with the baby and struck and shook the child then, and on previous occasions.

The Goshen News reports that Allen is due back in court in late September.
