Shipping on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway are continuing to see a downturn.

That’s according to Bridge Michigan, who says the changes in the region’s steel industry are mostly responsible.

They say iron ore, limestone and coal are the three leading commodities shipped on the lakes, with iron ore for steelmaking being about 42 percent of the Great Lakes tonnage.

They do say, however, that the volume of asphalt, salt and gravel, slag iron and cement being shipped on the lakes is remaining steady.
