Upgrades are being planned for the outdoor sirens in St. Joseph County, which are mainly used for tornado warnings.
These enhancements follow Maui wildfires and aim to broaden their utility to include warnings for various hazards like wildfires or hazardous materials spills.
WSBT reports the county isn’t replacing the sirens themselves, but each siren will be getting an upgrade.
County leaders say the update will include 3 new sounds and will be one of the biggest and most robust upgrades in the state of Indiana.
They also say they’ll let you know what the different sounds mean before they are installed.
