Lawmakers in Michigan have given their approval to universal lead screening for children.
If the package of bills becomes law, it would require lead screening at the ages of 1 and 2. The plan was approved on Tuesday by the Democratic-led State Senate and passed on to Governor Whitmer for her expected signature.
GOP members opposed the measure. Supporters call the bills an important effort to combat lead poisoning in Michigan, which had the third highest percentage of children with elevelated blood lead levels in 2021.
Current guidelines only cover 1 of every 4 children.
