A man from Illinois died after fleeing from police during a traffic stop and crashing into a semi Monday afternoon.
A state trooper tried to pull over a gray 2012 Kia Optima near the Lake Station exit ramp just after 1:40 p.m. The driver, identified as Bryan Flores, 20, from Round Lake, Illinois, fled as the trooper was walking to speak with him.
Indiana State Police say the trooper quickly called off the chase, because there was too much traffic.
About 5 minutes later, dispatch took several calls about a serious wreck on interstate 90. The Kia had rear-ended a semi.
Police say Flores was thrown from the car and died after being flown by a helicopter to an Illinois hospital.
Investigators at the scene found duffle bags stuffed with marijuana in the trunk of the car. The driver of the semi was not hurt in the crash.
