Michigan is officially the first state to automatically register people to vote as they leave prison.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4983 into law on Thursday. Statistics from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office say more than 8,000 individuals released from state prisons will be impacted annually.

The state adopted statewide automatic voter registration in 2018 and has relied greatly on the department of motor vehicles to implement the automatic registration.

In addition to the department of corrections, the bill will expand the automatic voter registration program to other agencies with populations less likely to drive, such as the Department of Health and Human Services, Native American tribes and those applying for Medicare or tribal identification.
