A man was sentenced to 18 months on probation after allegedly cashing fake checks at Interra Credit Union.

48-year-old Jerome Fortune is charged with Counterfeiting after allegedly trying to cash a fake check on September 16 of last year.

The probable cause affidavit says the check was worth $3,338.

He also successfully cashed a check for $2,807, taking $50 and putting the rest in an envelope that he said was for his wife.

Later on, several area businesses had reported stolen mail from mailboxes in September, and according to The Goshen News, it was discovered that homeless people were being recruited to cash checks in return for $50 of the cashed money.
