The Indiana DNR has announced over $454,000 in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants.

The grants will go to 101 rural and volunteer fire departments in 58 counties. The money allows the departments to continue training and helps them purchase necessary equipment and gear.

One department in Elkhart County, one in Fulton County, two in LaGrange County, one in Marshall County, one in Pulaski County, one in Starke County and two in St. Joseph County will be receiving grants for various purposes.

ABC 57 reports that winning departments were chosen based on population density, acres of public lands protected and wildland fire reporting to DNR Fire Control Headquarters.
