Lake Erie “Smart Buoys” advance research and enjoyment

The Great Lakes are entering the digital age with the launching of a network of “smart buoys.”

Lake Erie is the testing ground for the new program, which connects a buoy network to the internet that provides data to researchers and anglers.

Bridge Michigan reports that the Smart Lake Erie Watershed Initiative was created by the Cleveland Water Alliance, a group that seeks to protect and improve how the State of Ohio uses the lakes. \

The project will also monitor harmful algae blooms and other climate challenges…and allow people on the lake to access a stronger online signal.
