The St. Joseph County Police Department plans to address the staffing shortage during next Tuesday’s County Council meeting.
According to Sheriff Bill Redman, the jail is currently 47 corrections officers short, with an inmate population of around 720.
Redman is considering the shortage a crisis, as current corrections officers have been working double shifts and merit officers pitching in when they can.
According to WNDU, the department has hired a new recruiter and is using social media, television, job fairs, and more to search for workers.
Redman emphasized that the position is a good option for young people, as the position offers multiple benefits, and pay starts at $45,000 a year right out of school.
