This week is National Consumer Protection Week, and I&M is focused on safety for its customers.

Last year I&M customers reported 165 scam attempts.

I&M wants its customers to be aware and on alert for scams, and warns that scammers may try to call or text customers with a caller ID showing the company’s name. However, it may still be a scam.

Scammers are often looking for personal information, and they may tell customers that they will mail checks for overpayments on an account if the customer provides them with personal data.

The scammer may also threaten to disconnect services if a payment is not immediately made.

If the caller syas they need the customer to make a payment through a mobile banking app or by using a pre-paid debit card, hang up and report the incident to I&M.

If somebody comes to your door and claims to be with I&M, check to make sure they are in a company vehicle and are carrying a company identification card.
