Vote on whether to extend tax abatement for developer Dave Matthews delayed

(Spencer Marsh/95.3 MNC)

A South Bend Council Committee has delayed a vote on extending a tax abatement for Matthews LLC, the developer of the East Race Market and 300 East Lasalle Apartments.

The city is suing the developer, David Matthews, for $7.5 million, claiming he missed the deadline to complete the projects as agreed.

Despite Dave Matthews owing over $600,000 in unpaid property taxes, some argue that denying the extension could lead to the closure of the East Race Market and endanger the apartment building.

Matthews attributes the 11-month delay to COVID-19 impacts. The committee will revisit the bill during their next meeting on June 24.
