St. Joseph County leaders have approved an $11 billion Amazon Web Services data center.
On Tuesday, the the county Redevelopment Commission, commissioners, and county council each signed off on the project that is being built in New Carlisle.
Amazon will be exempt from paying 85-percent of its taxes over 35 years on data shells that will need regular replacement and is also receiving a 50-percent Property Tax Abatement over 10 years along with an enterprise technology exemption.
Construction is already underway with one of nearly two dozen buildings currently in the works.
The project, which is expected to bring in 400 jobs, is said to be the largest capital investment in Indiana history.

Under the usual circumstances I am clever and concise. This is not a usual circumstance. My wife and I moved to a small town for a simple reason. We wanted to raise our children in a small town. Despite the misnomer that small town people are “simple”, we want our children raised in the environment that taught us how to regroup, rethink, and reengage. How to handle life’s curve balls. Now we have super A. I am sad for this. These jobs are jobs, not careers. This is not a positive. I can hire a staff to clean my toilets, but that doesn’t mean I’ve created wonderful new jobs. I love the Midwest and small towns. The country needs more of us, not less.
