Two people hurt, one person arrested in shooting on Johnson St. in South Bend

Two people were hurt and one person was arrested after a shooting in South Bend.

It was around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, when South Bend Police were patrolling in the area of Johnson and Rupel Streets when they heard the sound of gunfire. Officers then received a ShotSpotter alert for the 600 block of N. Johnson Street.

As officers were investigating, they were advised that two victims arrived at Memorial Hospital with apparent gunshot wounds.

Through an investigation by the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, Tawain Wilkins, 22, was identified as a suspect and was arrested on two preliminary charges associated with the shooting and was transported to the St. Joseph County Jail, where he awaits a formal charges from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
