Police chase ends in arrest of South Bend man allegedly driving stolen truck

A stolen vehicle pursuit on U.S. 20 ended with the arrest of a South Bend man in Burns Harbor. Around 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 8, an Indiana State Police trooper spotted a white 2022 Dodge Ram pickup truck reported stolen near State Road 49. When troopers attempted a traffic stop near State Road 149, the driver refused to pull over, prompting a chase.

The pursuit continued east on U.S. 20 before the suspect turned onto County Road 1400 North. The vehicle came to a sudden stop, and the driver fled into a nearby wooded area. Troopers pursued the suspect on foot and apprehended him in the woods.

The suspect was identified as Benjamin Vanvynckt, 41, of South Bend. He was taken to Porter County Jail and faces preliminary charges, including Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Habitual Traffic Violator, Unauthorized Control of a Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving.

Final charges will be determined by the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office.
