Driver cited after crash on State Road 120 in Elkhart

A 38-year-old woman was cited for distracted driving Wednesday night after her vehicle veered off State Road 120, striking multiple roadside objects before crashing into a utility pole.
According to police reports, the Elkhart woman, was driving a 2008 Jeep Patriot southwest on SR 120 near County Road 17 at approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when she began drifting in and out of her lane. Investigators say she was distracted when her vehicle left the roadway, hitting two chevron signs and an AEP utility pole.
The crash caused heavy front-end damage to the Jeep, along with damage to the rear driver-side wheel. Mackowicz, who was wearing a seatbelt, complained of leg pain and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for evaluation.
Authorities cited her for violating Indiana Code 9-21-8-59, which prohibits the use of telecommunications devices while operating a moving vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.
