A crash on I-80/94 claimed the life of a driver after their vehicle struck an INDOT Hoosier Helper truck.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, near the 7.7-mile marker, between Burr and Grant Streets, as the Hoosier Helper crew assisted a stranded driver with a flat tire on the right shoulder. Officials say the service vehicle had its emergency lights activated at the time.

According to police, a red 2008 Ford pickup veered off the highway at a high rate of speed and slammed into the back of the stationary Hoosier Helper vehicle. The impact caused catastrophic damage to the pickup, trapping the driver inside.

Indiana State Police troopers responded and attempted to render aid, but the driver was unresponsive. The Lake County Coroner later pronounced the individual dead at the scene.

The Hoosier Helper worker and the occupants of the disabled vehicle escaped without serious injuries.

Authorities say evidence suggests driver impairment may have played a role in the crash. Toxicology results are pending as part of the ongoing investigation.
