Despite stiff opposition, the St. Joseph County Council voted 5-4 to amend its rules and regulations.
Democrats and Council president Dan Schaetzle pushed the move through.Council members Amy Drake, Joe Thomas, Andy Rutten, and Randy Figg believe the passage will threaten a significant part of the county from getting a guaranteed voice in local government.
During public comment, three residents supported the changes, while nine opposed them.
The resolution will be reviewed at the St. Joseph County Commissioners meeting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18.
State law requires the commissioners to act within 10 days, and the meeting will be open to the public.
