The Department of Treasury is urging Michigan residents to stay vigilant against tax-related identity theft.

Cybercriminals are sending urgent messages and threatening to take criminal actions in an attempt to trick people into sharing personal information and filing fraudulent tax returns.

They say to use secure, password-protected internet connections, avoid suspicious links and never share personal information online. Verify sources before responding to emails, texts or calls, and trust your instincts.

If something seems suspicious, report it to the proper authorities.
