Gunfire on Loran Road leads to arrest of Michigan City man

A Michigan City man was arrested following a broad daylight shooting incident that unfolded in front of witnesses earlier this month.
It was earlier this month when Michigan City Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 200 block of Loran Road. Police say a dispute between two individuals escalated when a suspect fired multiple rounds into the victim’s vehicle.
Due to the public nature and seriousness of the incident, the case was assigned to the department’s Crime Suppression Unit, which quickly identified Arthur Smith, 48, as the suspect. Detectives gathered statements from witnesses and, last week, received credible information that Smith intended to flee the state.
In response, CSU coordinated with patrol officers and SWAT teams to conduct a targeted operation. Smith and three others were taken into custody, and a residential search warrant was executed.
Smith now faces several felony charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, intimidation with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and pointing a firearm at another person. He remains in custody at the LaPorte County Jail on a $20,000 cash bond, with an initial court hearing set for June 24.
Authorities have not yet released details on the other three individuals arrested. The investigation is ongoing.
