Motorcyclist killed, Driver arrested after crash in Elkhart County

UPDATE: Franklin Herington was transferred to a Fort Wayne hospital where he died of his injuries last (Mon.) night. Angelina Valente’s is now in-custody for operating while intoxicated causing death pending review by the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office.

ORIGINAL STORY: A crash in Elkhart County has left one man hospitalized and another driver under arrest for operating while intoxicated.

The collision happened around 5:18 a.m. on Monday, July 7, in the 24900 block of County Road 20, just west of County Road 111. According to authorities, a Honda CBR motorcycle was traveling westbound when it struck the rear passenger side bumper of an eastbound Lincoln MKC that was turning into a driveway.

The motorcyclist, identified as a 55-year-old Elkhart man, was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with serious injuries. As of the latest update, he remains unconscious.

The driver of the Lincoln, Angelina Valente, 30, of Mishawaka, was found to be intoxicated after failing both field sobriety tests and a drug recognition evaluation. Police say she refused a blood draw, prompting a search warrant for a blood sample. She was arrested on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and possession of marijuana.
