An armed individual was shot and killed early following an encounter with South Bend Police officers at Karl King Tower.

Police were called to the 500 block of East Monroe Street around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, for reports of a stabbing. During the response and initial investigation, two South Bend officers discharged their weapons, critically wounding a person believed to be involved in the incident.

The individual was taken to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. No officers or other individuals were injured.

Under an existing interlocal agreement, the Mishawaka Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from the St. Joseph County Police Department. Once completed, the findings will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The South Bend Police Department will also conduct an internal investigation to determine whether the officers’ actions followed department policy, procedure, and training.

Per department policy, both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
