Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley hosts annual Menorah lighting ceremony amid mourning

text

The Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley held its annual Menorah lighting ceremony in downtown South Bend on Sunday during a time of mourning.

The gathering followed an anti-Semitic shooting in Sydney, Australia, that killed 11 people and injured dozens during a Jewish event.

Federation leaders shared condolences with Rabbi Schneur and Sari Gansburg of Chabad of Greater South Bend. Their colleague, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, was among those killed.

South Bend police provided security as Jewish groups nationwide increased safety measures for Chanukah.

Because of the cold, attendees gathered inside the Morris Performing Arts Center before moving outside to light a candle on the large Chanukkiah in the plaza.
