Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced the release of a Department of Attorney General report detailing allegations of sexual abuse and other sexual misconduct within the Diocese of Grand Rapids.
The report compiles information from a statewide tip line, victim interviews, police investigations, open-source media, and paper and electronic records obtained from the diocese, as well as allegations disclosed by diocesan officials. It includes a list of 51 priests against whom allegations of sexual misconduct involving children or adults have been made dating back to 1950. Of those, 38 were ordained or incardinated by the Diocese of Grand Rapids.
The findings are based in part on evidence gathered through a search warrant executed at the diocese on Oct. 3, 2018, along with reports received through the attorney general’s tip line, which has been operating since 2018.
“Accountability does not end with criminal prosecution,” Nessel said in a statement. “Accountability includes transparency, acknowledgement and a commitment to believing in and supporting victims. No matter how much time has passed, survivors deserve to be heard.”
The Diocese of Grand Rapids agreed to provide reports of abuse to the attorney general’s office, a step officials said was critical in compiling the report. Many victims first report alleged abuse to faith leaders, making cooperation from the diocese essential to the investigation.
The report contains detailed allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct, including grooming and misuse of authority involving both minors and adults. In many cases, criminal prosecution is not possible due to statutes of limitations, the death of the accused, or because the alleged conduct did not violate Michigan law or the victim chose not to pursue charges.
