A single-vehicle crash sent three people to the hospital, late Friday morning, Dec. 19, after a driver fell asleep at the wheel in the Bristol area, according to police.
The crash happened around 11:55 a.m. on State Road 120 near County Road 29. Authorities say a 2018 Ford Explorer traveling northeast left the roadway, crossed into the westbound lane, and went off the north side of the road into a ditch, where it struck a tree stump before coming to a stop.
The driver, and 18-year-old woman from Middlebury, complained of head pain and was cited. A front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Nottawa, Michigan, reported chest and lower-body pain, while a 1-year-old rear-seat passenger from Middlebury complained of neck pain. All occupants were wearing seatbelts.
All three were transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment. The vehicle sustained heavy front-end and undercarriage damage. The crash remains under investigation.
