A 19-year-old man was shot and killed Monday morning in a residential neighborhood on the city’s south side.

Police say the shooting happened shortly before 8 a.m. on March 2 in the 2600 block of Morton Avenue. The Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a report of a shooting with injuries, prompting officers with the Elkhart Police Department and other first responders to rush to the scene.

When officers arrived, they found Marco Antonio Lopez Terrazas Jr. outside a residence suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection to the shooting. The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office says the suspect is being held without bond until an initial hearing, Thursday, March 5, in Elkhart Circuit Court. Prosecutors say a decision on formal charges is expected by the end of the week.
