Michigan officials are exploring legal options to block a proposed Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Romulus.

According to Bridge Michigan, federal records show the Department of Homeland Security plans to convert a nearly 473,000-square-foot warehouse into a detention processing facility. The site would include new fencing, security checkpoints, and other upgrades.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has demanded ICE halt the project, arguing the agency failed to properly coordinate with state and local officials.

Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight said the city will not issue permits for the facility while he remains in office.

However, an ICE spokesperson told Bridge Michigan the agency has already purchased the property and expects the project to create more than 1,400 jobs and generate $33 million in tax revenue.

The proposal has sparked protests and heated public meetings. Officials say their legal options may be limited as the federal government moves forward.
