A revised paid parking proposal for downtown St. Joseph is moving to the City Commission with a recommendation from the Downtown Development Authority.
If approved, paid parking would be limited to fewer than 200 spaces in the busiest downtown blocks, significantly reduced from last year’s trial program of more than 800 spaces.
Most parking lots on both sides of Main Street would remain free, though some would carry a three-hour time limit. The program would run from June 1 through Labor Day, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. St. Joseph residents would receive free parking passes.
Supporters say revenue from the program would fund downtown improvements, while some business owners have expressed concerns about potential impacts. The City Commission is scheduled to meet March 16.
