The South Bend Community Police Review Board held its first open house Monday to hear residents’ thoughts on police policies, especially when dealing with teenagers.
The meeting follows last summer’s viral bodycam video showing an officer’s altercation with a teen, which sparked debate in the community. Board members focused on de-escalation strategies for youth. T
They identified three main steps: get the juvenile’s side of the story, consider their age, and allow a “wait time” for the teen to calm down before responding.
