Elkhart County Commissioners have approved a new pay schedule for vote center workers, marking the first update to the system in more than a decade.
County Clerk Patty Pickens said the previous pay structure had not been revised since 2014 and no longer reflected the workload. She also noted past inconsistencies in compensation.
Under the new plan, clerks and facilitators will earn $150 per day, while supervisors will receive $200. Workers assigned from the opposite political party—who are responsible for returning election materials—will receive an additional $10 per day.
The updated schedule also sets new rates for early voting. Workers will earn $122 on most Mondays, $110 from Tuesday through Saturday, and $50 on the Monday before Election Day. Opposition party workers again receive an extra $10 per day.
Poll workers will also receive a $20 food allowance, except on the Monday before Election Day, which is considered a half day. Training sessions will be paid at $30.
Workers will continue to be classified as independent contractors and paid a flat daily rate rather than hourly wages.
