Indiana Supreme Court to hear challenge to religious-based abortion lawsuit

The Indiana Supreme Court will hear a case challenging the state’s near-total abortion ban based on religious freedom.
The case will bypass the Indiana Court of Appeals, with oral arguments scheduled for September 10.
The challenge stems from a permanent injunction issued in March, citing a substantial burden on religious exercise under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
The lawsuit was brought forward in 2022, seeking exceptions for individuals whose religious beliefs conflict with the abortion ban, which was implemented in August 2023 after Roe v. Wade was overturned.
