A LaPorte resident was killed in a crash involving a semi on U.S. 20 in LaPorte County.

Deputies were called at 12:46 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, to the area of U.S. 20 and Michigan Street for a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial motor vehicle.

According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened several hundred feet west of Michigan Street in an active construction zone where traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.

Investigators say a gold 1995 Nissan traveling eastbound crossed left of center and collided with a purple 2000 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer. The Nissan struck the rear axle of the semi tractor and then the trailer.

The driver of the Nissan, 48-year-old Clemie Chapman of La Porte, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi driver was not injured.

Toxicology results are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
