Search underway for child reported missing in Lake Michigan near Washington Park Beach

Emergency crews searched the waters near Washington Park Beach on Monday evening following reports of a possible drowning involving a child.

According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers were dispatched to the beach around 5:30 p.m. after bystanders reported seeing a child enter the water on the east side of the catwalk, just south of the lighthouse.

Witnesses told police the child, who was reportedly wearing red shorts, disappeared beneath the water and did not resurface.

Police, along with other emergency responders, launched a search of the area in an effort to locate the child. Washington Park Beach officials also responded to assist with the incident.

As of Monday evening, the search remained ongoing. No additional information about the child or the circumstances surrounding the incident had been released.
