Dowagiac man arrested after family dispute leads to stabbing

Stabbing

A 56-year-old Dowagiac man was arrested Sunday after police say he stabbed a family member during a domestic dispute.

Dowagiac Police said the 23-year-old victim walked into the police department around 5:10 p.m. Sunday with a stab wound to the chest. Officers immediately provided first aid before the victim was taken by SMCAS Ambulance to Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The victim told officers he had been stabbed during an argument with a family member at a home on Spruce Street. According to investigators, the argument became physical before the victim was stabbed. He then left the residence and drove to the police department to report the incident.

Officers later went to the Spruce Street home, where they interviewed the suspect and witnesses before taking the 56-year-old man into custody.

The suspect was arrested on a preliminary charge of assault with intent to murder and lodged in the Cass County Jail. His name is being withheld pending arraignment in Cass County’s 4th District Court.
