As Hoosiers prepare to celebrate Independence Day and the nation’s 250th anniversary, the Indiana State Police Peru District is encouraging residents to put safety first when using consumer fireworks.
Troopers remind the public that children should never handle or ignite fireworks, and fireworks should never be aimed or thrown at another person. Officials also recommend lighting fireworks only one at a time, keeping a water source or fire extinguisher nearby, and soaking used fireworks before disposing of them to reduce the risk of fire.
The agency also advises against using fireworks while under the influence of alcohol, attempting to modify fireworks, or relighting fireworks that fail to ignite. Fireworks should always be used outdoors and stored in a cool, dry location away from children.
State Police are also asking residents to be mindful of neighbors, veterans, people living with PTSD or other medical conditions, and pets, which can be startled or distressed by loud explosions.
Indiana law allows the use of consumer fireworks on private property or on property where the owner has granted permission. Fireworks may only be purchased by individuals who are at least 18 years old.
State law protects the following consumer fireworks hours:
June 29 through July 3: 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset.
July 4: 10 a.m. until midnight.
July 5 through July 9: 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset.
December 31: 10 a.m. until 1 a.m.
Officials note that while local governments cannot prohibit fireworks during those protected hours, additional local restrictions may apply at other times of the year. Residents are encouraged to review local ordinances before celebrating.
