An 18-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with a weekend shooting in South Bend that left one person injured.

South Bend Police responded to reports of shots fired around 11:40 p.m. Friday in the 6700 block of Nimtz Parkway. When officers arrived, they learned the victim had already gone to a local hospital with an apparent gunshot wound.

Police said the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators identified 18-year-old Marquis Burton Jr. as the suspect. He was later located, arrested, and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Burton with criminal recklessness and criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon.

Burton remains jailed while the investigation continues. The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate the shooting.
