A mother and son escaped unharmed from a large apartment fire in Benton Township over the weekend.

Firefighters were called early Sunday to the area of Highland and Crystal avenues, just south of Southwest Michigan Regional Airport.

Heavy flames could be seen coming from the apartment building.

Officials say the mother and son were able to get outside before firefighters arrived, and neither was injured.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
