Congress has approved legislation aimed at keeping people convicted of child sex crimes out of union leadership positions.

Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg, who chairs the House Education and Workforce Committee, praised passage of the Ending Predator Access to Union Power Act.

The bill adds sex offenses against minors to the list of convictions that can bar someone from serving in certain union offices or jobs.

Federal law already restricts union leadership roles for people convicted of crimes including murder, rape, robbery and embezzlement.

The measure now moves to the Senate for consideration.
