A new federal report finds students ages 12 to 18 reported higher crime victimization rates at school than away from school in 2024.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics says there were 27 reported theft or nonfatal violent crimes for every 1,000 students at school, compared with about 18 per 1,000 away from school.

The overall school victimization rate has not changed significantly over the past decade. However, reported nonfatal violent victimization at school rose from 14.2 per 1,000 students in 2023 to nearly 22 per 1,000 last year. Much of that increase involved simple assault.

Theft at school has declined substantially since 2014.

The report includes incidents on school property, buses and while students travel to and from school.
