A South Bend resident was flown to Indianapolis for treatment after suffering burn injuries in a house fire late Monday night.

South Bend firefighters were called to a home in the 1300 block of College Street shortly before midnight. Flames were coming from the back of the house and the backyard, and fire was also found inside. All residents had gotten out before firefighters arrived.

Crews brought the fire under control in about 40 minutes. One resident was taken to Memorial Hospital before being flown to Indianapolis. Firefighters rescued one dog; a second dog was found dead. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by a generator. The heat and flames also brought down a nearby power line.

Fire officials remind residents to operate generators outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents. Never use one indoors or in an attached garage, and let it cool before refueling. Residents should also keep generators away from combustible materials, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working.
