Indiana Receives More Than $75 Million for Railroad Improvements, Including Projects in Michiana

(Tommie Lee/95.3 MNC)
More than $75 million in federal funding has been awarded to seven railroad infrastructure projects across Indiana, including improvements to rail operations in the Michiana region.
The funding, provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation, is intended to modernize railroad infrastructure, improve safety and strengthen freight transportation.
Among the recipients is Elkhart and Western Railroad, which will receive more than $15 million for upgrades and replacements involving Patriot Rail equipment. The improvements are expected to increase operational efficiency and strengthen freight transportation capabilities.
The Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad will also benefit from the federal investment, receiving more than $2.8 million for track rehabilitation in the region.
Officials say the projects are designed to improve the reliability of railroad operations while addressing infrastructure needs.
The funding is part of a broader federal investment in Indiana’s railroad network, which plays a significant role in moving goods throughout the state and the Midwest.
Specific construction timelines for the projects were not provided.
